One of the most unique thing was learning that they have a history class
and a cultural/language class. A fact I learned was that most of the Menominee
today don’t speak fluent language, only some of the elders do. When we ate
lunch with the students at the Menominee reservation, their lunch was better
than our schools. I thought it wasn’t going to be that good but it turned out
differently than I suspected. I was astonished by how much knowledge the
students at the school knew about their culture and the stories and traditions
they do.
The Menominee have many traditions like one is that when they are in 8th
grade, they make like lacrosse sticks by like carving them and forming them into
a lacrosse stick, but they have a hook on them and it isn’t really like
lacrosse, it is more physical and it doesn’t use a ball you use this leather
strap and try to wrap the strap around a pole to score points. That was the game
the girls play. The guys do something like it but it is more like lacrosse.
Also, that when the boys are about 13 they have to build this shack and put
rocks in it and make a fire and they don’t get any food or water for 3 days.
The only thing they can do during that time is pray. This is to start a young
adult stage and they don’t get called a man at 18 like we do they get called a
man when they earn that label.
